The Quilt Equation

Free Tools for Quilters

Hi, I'm Susan — Prayeriewife Quilting

I built these calculators because I got tired of doing quilt math on sticky notes.

They're free, they're yours, and I hope they save you a trip to the quilt shop for that extra half yard.

After you sign up, you'll receive an email with a link to access The Quilt Equation — your free member area where all five calculators live. When you click the link, you'll be prompted to create a password using the same email address you signed up with. Once you're in, bookmark the page and come back anytime. No PDF, no downloads — just log in and start calculating.

Half Square Triangle (HST) Calculator
Tell it your finished HST size and how many you need — it tells you exactly what to cut. Uses the 2-at-a-time method: draw, sew, cut, done. Optional oversize & trim setting for extra-precise points.

Binding Calculator
Enter your quilt size, strip width, and fabric width — get your strip count, total yardage, and exactly how much to buy, rounded up to the nearest ⅛ yard.

Pieces Per Cut Calculator
How many 2½" squares fit in a fat quarter? How many bricks fit in a half yard? Enter your fabric size and piece size and it tells you exactly what you'll get — plus how much fabric is left over.

Backing Calculator
Built for longarm customers — horizontal seams only. Enter your quilt size and overage, and it gives you a complete cutting plan with panel sizes and yardage to buy.

Border Calculator
Measure your quilt top, enter your border width, and get strip count, yardage, and exact cut lengths — with a reminder that sides always go on first.

Also Included: Patchwork Panel Calculator
For the Almondine Bag and any project using the interfacing panel method. Enter your finished panel size and cut square size — it calculates your grid layout, total squares to cut, and the interfacing size to hold them all. After sewing, the panel trims down to size.
